Report on Early Cancer Detection Camp
ROTARY CLUB OF BORIVLI JOINTLY WITH DIGAMBAR JAIN SANSTHA
(YOGI NAGAR) held a Camp on Sunday 26th August,
2012, from 10.00 am to 1 pm at Digamber Jain Mandir, Shop no 10, Ram
Towers, Adinath Road, Off. Link Road, Borivali West, Mumbai. Tests were
carried out by Doctors from Cancer Patients Aid Association headed by PP Dr
Chandrashekhar Joshi. Total 88 patients were examined @ a notional charge of
Rs. 300/- per head. Many Rotarians and their family members took the benefit
of the camp.
The screening program involved the following examinations/tests:-
The Head & Neck examination included an Indirect Laryngoscopy (IDL), visual
examination of the oral cavity – Buccal Mucosa, Hard & Soft Palate, Tongue
and Gingivo-buccal Sulcus for pre-cancerous lesions; along with a complete
ear-nose-throat checkup by an ENT specialist / Head & Neck surgeon.
The medical examination for men, involved a complete physical examination,
including a per-rectal (digital) examination (preliminary exploration for
colo-rectal polyps and enlarged prostate) and examination of the genitals
for testicular cancer.
The gynaecological examination for women consisted of an internal
examination, including a per-speculum visual inspection of the uterine
cervix, a Pap Smear Test (cytological examination) for early detection of
Cervical Cancer and clinical examination (palpation) of the breasts. All
women were taught breast self-examination.
Routine Blood Test – Haemoglobin & White Blood Count to identify infections
or anaemic conditions.
Complete general check-up by a Physician.
The Surgeon assessed the results and adviced follow-up activities, which
included further Radiological investigations and Mammograms, if necessary.
